Pet of the Month: Dakota

Pet of the Month: DakotaHi, my name is Dakota—or Koda for short. I am a 2½-year-old (very handsome) Pomeranian. I stand at a whopping 9.7 pounds, although you’d guess more with all of my fluff. My dad, Jim, says I am a very special dog and often tells me that I’m heaven-sent—he calls me his guardian angel. I love going for long walks so that I can sniff everything in sight, and riding in cars because I know I’m going to meet new people.

As a puppy, I was VERY energetic. I loved socializing in puppy class, but it simply wasn’t enough. Dr. Jeff told my dad I needed a “job,” so I began the process of becoming a certified therapy dog.

The classes were so much fun! I got to meet lots of new friends and the training left me pooped at the end of the day. After two years of training classes, I was completely AKC, and Canine Good Citizen certified, as well as a registered therapy dog with Pet Partners.

A few days a week, my dad takes me to see patients in the hospital and spend time with them. I LOVE making people smile! We travel to Waukesha Memorial Hospital on a weekly basis to bring joy to all of the people there. My dad is always amazed to see the effect I have on the patients. People who don’t speak try to speak and people that cannot move try and reach out to pet me. We visit all different types of patients from the heart care unit, oncology department, ER, and the psychiatric department. We are currently looking for a few other facilities to visit as well.

I love playing fetch with and chasing my favorite stuffed ducky—and at the end of the day, all I want is to snuggle on the couch with my dad.
